Meet Mitchell

Ask Mitchell what is his favorite thing to do in winter and he'll quickly reply, "Snowboarding!"

Born with spina bifida, this 10 -year-old is learning adaptive snowboarding - a challenge due to lack of feeling in his lower legs. When Mitchell turned 2, his family learned about Gillette Children's Specialty Healthcare. Mitchell's first appointment made a lasting impression. "At Gillette, we could see every specialist we needed in one day," says Kristy Tanquist, Mitchell's mom. "Everyone genuinely connected with, and cared about, Mitchell." Mitchell has received a range of services at Gillette throughout his childhood, including neurosurgery, orthopedic care, and rehabilitation therapy. Today, Mitchell continues to work with his Gillette therapists, who, along with his parents, encourage him to be as independent as possible.

Recent milestones include transitioning from sitting to standing on his own, and walking by himself. He loves knowing he can do what other kids do," says Mitchell's mom. "Snowboarding has been the best experience for Mitchell."
